I’ m still trying to figure out, when you become a meme, does that mean you’re a success, or you’ve gone too far and become pitiful?

Depends on how you rate having gone too far - and whether you can “successfully” do so. Similar to the “how does one make fun of a clown” paradox, and the question of whether it makes sense to laugh at an Andy Kaufman Elvis bit, and if so, why.

I suspect most people define success as making them money. I’ll bet Doug has a nice chuckle every time he sees himself in a joke because it means he just got noticed more and increased his bottom line.
I never really found Andy Kaufman that funny. Don’t know what that says about me.

Andy Kaufman is mostly an exercise in cleverly being stupid, and being hu morously unfunny. Not as funny as straight up comedy, nor as clever as being “ordinarily” clever, but unique.
The Elvis impersonation is a thought experiment. How badly can one impersonate the weak, shallow aspects of Pop Culture Elvis before one goes too far? How much slack should we cut somebody who is not native to the culture for being shallow and tedious?
Then, it gets to the singing. A joke is played on the audience because they never expected good singing. And isn’t singing like Elvis the most important part of understanding what Elvis was all about?
It's a mindscrew.
